The Power of Game Pods with Family & Friends

A journey through game pods with a how-to checklist.

How To Create Your Very Own Games for Seva Game Pod:

  • Acquire a game whether you buy it or borrow it and send out a fun invite to people. Game pods don’t have to be centered around the game itself but rather Indian Culture as a whole. I strongly recommend Chariots of Fate!

  • Simple invites can be found on Canva! Try to make it colorful so that people are naturally more attracted to it. Include the date, time, and location.

  • Play the game yourself a few times in order to familiarize yourself with the contents of it. Try to also understand the historical or current context of the game.

    • The rules of all games are inside the box on cards that are typically a different color from the rest of the playing cards. If you are confused by anything, make sure to ask a GVLP member about what to do.

  • Once the previous steps are completed, make sure to prepare some supplemental activities. Suggestions for those are at the end of the blog.

  • When playing, walk the players through every single step. Do it slowly since others aren’t familiar with the game. If you are completely new to it as well, running it with someone else may not be a bad idea.

    • Break down all the components of the game. It is important to explain every detail of the game as well as its significance.

  • After playing the game a few times, as many as you feel are necessary, mention how the players can buy the game.

    • Refer to step one for this information.

  • Now take part in the aforementioned supplemental activities and don’t forget:

    • Take photos and videos (time-lapse is recommended)

    • Get feedback on the gameplay

    • Write down key take-aways that the players had

    • Share these pictures and experiences with the GVLP team!

Our GVLP Experience with the Chariots of Fate Game Pods

Playing games fosters a sense of togetherness and friendly competition. But it also requires curiosity and the ability to ask - why? If game pods taught us anything it is that community, kindness, and inclusion can be found anywhere if you so choose to look for it.

Playing the game with people of varying ethnicities was quite interesting as many were interested in learning more. The mythology and thought behind the game interested them so much that we even watched a movie based on the Ramayana after.

Supplemental activities (feel free to create your own as well):

Ramayana Based Games (other mythology based games can follow this as well):

  • Watch a Ramayana based movie

  • Ramayana book read

  • Watch some YouTube videos on the Ramayana

For Simpler Games for Younger Children:

  • Watch Bollywood Movies

  • Do some coloring activities related to Hinduism or general Indian culture

  • Watch easy to understand YouTube videos on the aforementioned topics

For Climate Related Games:

  • Watch a documentary on climate change

  • Do a mini quiz to test how much people know about climate change

General Ideas:

  • Have participants create their own versions of games and then pitch their ideas to see who has the best.

  • Talk to them about their cultures and learn more about the similarities and differences between their culture and yours.
