This trip to Costa Rica has been a transformative journey for me, exploring the enchanting landscapes, vibrant culture, and holistic practices that Costa Rica offers while delving into various ways this tropical haven can nurture our minds and souls.

I truly embarked on an amazing adventure through Costa Rica, uncovering the intersection between nature, wellness, and mental well-being. From the misty rainforests to the tranquil beaches, each corner of this country holds the potential to rejuvenate our spirits and provide solace to our minds. But it’s not just about the scenery ~ it’s about the practices, traditions, and perspectives that make Costa Rica a unique destination for promoting mental health.

Mental well-being and the Costa Rican way of life are intertwined together. This Central American gem fosters holistic well-being through mindfulness practices rooted in nature to the impact of eco-friendly initiatives on the community and their mental health. Through the personal anecdotes and expert insights of our tour guides, coupled with cultural explorations, I found myself in a space that helped me find inspiration, support, and resources for my own mental health journey. From relaxation techniques, mindfulness practices, or an escape into the lush landscapes, Costa Rica is a place designed to be a source of comfort and guidance.

This trip ~ Costa Rica ~ Travel with a Purpose, has been a fruitful experience that helped me discover how nature, culture, and a mindful approach to life can lead to a more harmonious relationship with our minds and the world around us.

BIOPHILIA PARK IN COSTA RICA AND MENTAL HEALTH

A BIOPHILIA park can have positive effects on mental health. Spending time in a natural environment like a park has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. The term “BIOPHILIA” suggests that humans have an innate connection to nature, and being in a park that embraces natural elements can evoke feelings of calmness and restoration.

Features like greenery, open spaces, water features, and walking paths in a BIOPHILIA park can improve relaxation and mental well-being. Engaging with nature through activities like walking, meditation, or simply enjoying the surroundings can help lower stress levels and promote a sense of tranquility.

I did visit the BIOPHILIA park at Quepos in Costa Rica and truly experienced its potential benefits for my mental health. This is a private biological reserve and environmental education center. I clearly recall our certified guide saying that their goal is to empower and educate visitors from around the globe about the importance of conservation and sustainability of medicinal plants. They have more than 120 medicinal plant species in their garden. The use of medicinal plants has a long history in Costa Rica. As a mental health advocate, I was particularly interested in 3 kinds of plants:-

1. CITRONELLA

The guide gave us a cup of citronella tea at the very start of the tour. It was cooling and refreshing, and uplifted my mood instantly. The guide explained that citronella has many benefits; one is that it helps with anxiety and stress. It is a natural mood uplifter with a happy smell and relaxation properties. It instantly relieves natural stress as it works on both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.

2. PATCHOULI

The patchouli essential oil has a grounding, balancing, calming, and harmonizing scent that relieves anxiety, stress, and depression, making it effective for achieving relaxation, especially in meditation. The guide particularly told me to apply patchouli oil on the head or temples of the forehead as it calms and thereby helps one to sleep. I had asked him specifically as I stress a great deal and thereby unable to sleep on time.

3. CINNAMON

Cinnamon is a neuroprotective that helps neurons and improves motor function, thereby helping reduce symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

CHOCOLATE MASSAGE IN COSTA RICA AND MENTAL HEALTH

At the Natria Spa at Arsenal Springs Resort, I experienced my most magical treatment and my true PURA VIDA moment…..the chocolate massage. In a high-ceiling private bungalow amongst the tropical gardens with the soothing sounds of running water, the birds chirping, and the sounds of music, I got the best massage I could ever imagine.

A chocolate massage can have positive effects on mental health due to its sensory and relaxing nature. The combination of chocolate's soothing scent, the massage's tactile sensation, and the potential release of endorphins can contribute to an improved mental state. This is how a chocolate massage impacted my mental well-being:

1. MOOD

Chocolate is often associated with pleasure and indulgence. A chocolate massage can provide a unique and enjoyable experience that allows individuals to pamper themselves, which can positively affect their mood.

2. SELF CARE

The act of taking time for self-care and receiving a massage fostered a strong mind-body connection. This connection helped me better understand my needs and feelings, promoting a sense of overall well-being.

3. IMPROVED MENTAL STATE

The sensory experience of a massage, combined with the pleasant aroma of chocolate, can trigger the release of endorphins. These natural chemicals can create feelings of happiness and contentment, thereby improving mental health.

4. COMFORT- PAMPER

Chocolate massage had a therapeutic effect on me and my emotions. It was comforting and pampering that helped alleviate my feelings of stress and thereby boosted my mood.

RELAXATION AND END OF ALL ANXIETIES

The techniques and strokes used as the therapist applied the warm chocolate, enriched with cocoa butter, helped soothe my tense muscles after a long journey that took from way early in the morning to late evening. It promoted a sense of relaxation, both physical and mental, thereby eliminating all my anxieties.

SAVORING COSTA RICA: EXPLORING THE GASTRONOMICAL DELIGHTS AND MENTAL HEALTH

Bienvenidos! In Costa Rica, I was welcomed to a delectable journey that consisted of many culinary wonders. It truly was a gastronomical odyssey where I explored the vibrant, flavorful, and diverse Costa Rican cuisine. It is a true paradise for food enthusiasts.

Costa Rican cuisine reflects the country’s cultural tapestry, blending indigenous, Spanish, and African influences with the bounties of its lush landscapes. Whether you’re an adventurous eater or someone who appreciates comfort food, Costa Rica offers a delightful array of dishes and flavors to savor.

The traditional staples include gallo pinto(rice and beans), Casado, which is the s typical Costa Rican lunch, and tamales. The seafood extravaganza includes fresh fish from the Pacific and Caribbean oceans, like salmon, mahi-mahi, tuna, and shrimp. Exotic fruits include the quintessential passion fruit, dragon fruit, soursop, starfruit, watermelons, pineapple mangoes, papaya, and bananas. I learned immensely about the coffee culture, like cultivating, roasting, and brewing the world’s finest beans. As far as street food is considered, empanadas and tacos were the most popular. Lastly, the sweets and desserts included treats like fried sweet plantains, tres leches cake, flan, and various pastries.

Warm hospitality defines Costa Rican dining. It was simply one culinary adventure - BUEN PROVECHO! Which means enjoy your meal. My stomach full and my heart touched, I can truly say that I’m in a happy state of mind! I’m positive, optimistic and cheerful.

PURA VIBRA

I came across an art studio in Monte Verde. The artist’s name is Ferlander Arguedas. He has a spiritual philosophy which completely stuck with me - “ PURA VIBRA” It is a phrase in Spanish that encapsulates a positive and relaxed way of living. It can be understood as ‘Pure Vibe’ or ‘Good Vibes’ It is used to express a positive, carefree and optimistic attitude, often associated with engaging life and embracing positive energy. As the world grapples with the far-reaching consequences of climate change, the lush beauty of Costa Rica is not exempt from its effects. Consequently, environmental shifts can impact the mental well-being of its inhabitants.

From shifting weather patterns to rising sea levels, the country’s ecosystems are undergoing transformation. Simultaneously, the emotional landscape of individuals and communities in Costa Rica who are grappling with climate-related anxiety should also be considered.
